I am Suvar or as some people mistakenly call me – Sugar! Whatsapp does not recognize my name, so autocorrects it to to sugar instead. I don’t mind – it’s a pretty sweet name!
Growing up in a household where food, and baking, were at the centre of our lives I have been exposed to a multitude of different flavours. Growing up, I was in the very privileged position of having mums, sisters, grandmothers and aunts who took pride in making sure I was well fed. This changed however when I moved from Durban to Cape Town to study. I now had to rely on my own culinary strengths to make sure I survived.
How did I do? Dismally! I mostly lived off take-away and store-bought meals. In my fourth year of university, I decided to bake red velvet cupcakes for a friend’s birthday. The first time I baked anything! The results were average, but my friends love me (I think) so they ate it and smiled.
I am an actuary by profession, so have quite a technical background. I think this is what makes me so passionate about baking. The precision in taking a set of ingredients and turning it into something delicious never ceases to amaze me! That being said, baking also allows me to explore my creative side by exploring how I decorate and create new flavour combinations.
I am by no means a trained chef and my creations are not perfect, but they are ones which I am proud of and want to share with the rest of the world. I hope you enjoy my different adventures and find sweetness in all that we bake and create together x
